Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival

Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival documentary is envisioned as a path that describes and unfolds the preconditions and goals of Broken Nature, the XXII International Exhibition of Triennale Milano, curated by Paola Antonelli, through the voices of its protagonists. Broken Nature exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the strands that connect humans to the natural environment that have been intensely compromised, if not entirely severed, over the years. By casting a wide net on architecture and design projects, Broken Nature underlines the concept of restorative design, highlighting objects and concepts at all scales that reconsider human beings’ relationship with their environments –including both natural and social ecosystems.

Two Pianos

Combining two landmark projects by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop — the Fondation Beyeler in Basel and the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, the filmmakers Paul Clemence and Axel Stasny apply their artistic sensibility to highlight Piano's architectural vocabulary: the masterful use of light, the carefully orchestrated relationship between in and out, the seamless connection to the surroundings, and an exacting precision of craftsmanship. Originally conceived as a video commission by the Art Museums of Switzerland, the film expands on the initial premise to create a cinematic homage to the Italian master architect.

The Marinaressa Gardens

The Marinaressa gardens are located along the Riva dei Sette Martiri, the monumental San Marco waterfront of the city of Venice, right between the Arsenale and the Biennale Gardens. They are just a short distance from Piazza San Marco, overlooking the laguna. Built in the 1930s, intended as a place to celebrate the city, the twin gardens replaced a long sequence of shipyards which for centuries had operated in the area. The European Cultural Centre, through the organization of exhibitions and events over the years, has managed to restore and improve the gardens while also returning them to the city for public use. For this reason we wanted a projection area to be located in these symbolic gardens.
Giardini della Marinaressa

The Cloister of San Francesco della Vigna

The cloisters of San Francesco della Vigna were selected following a different logic: San Francesco della Vigna is a monumental 16th century church, one of the major religious buildings and one to which the greatest architects and artists of the Venetian Renaissance have contributed. Nevertheless, given its location in the Castello district, it is outside the tourist flow. The The 15th century cloisters are an example of that hidden Venice that visitors often do not see but where local communities live and build neighbourhood relationships.
The Cloisters will host the projection of all the selected films of the Competition.

Padiglione Venezia - Giardini della Biennale

On the occasion of the initiative "Aperture Straordinarie", the Venice Architecture Short Film Festival Festival will be featured at the Padiglione Venezia, one of the historic exhibition spaces located inside the Giardini at the Venice Biennale, a symbolic place, originally created to host the best examples of decorative arts produced in the city and exposed in an international panorama. The structure was reopened to the public in 2011 after an intense activity of restoration.
The selected short films of the Festival will be presented at Padiglione Venezia on a two days program, on the 2nd & the 4th of September 2020.
